A major fire erupted with alarming speed on Sunday morning at Zongo Lane in Accra, resulting in the collapse of the primary-story building and intensifying the destruction in the Makola Zogolane area.
The building’s collapse has further heightened concerns about the structural stability of surrounding properties.
On Tuesday, Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover and security officials inspected the fire scene.
Despite ongoing efforts to manage the situation, the building’s collapse compounded the damage and raised severe alarms about the safety of nearby structures, highlighting the potential danger.
The fire, which started three days prior, has impacted several apartments and warehouses predominantly owned by Chinese nationals. As of Tuesday, remnants of the fire were still apparent, with lingering smoke visible at the site.
During the inspection, Minister Glover and the officials observed the fire service’s response, which included the use of a turntable ladder, a specialized firefighting equipment used for high-rise buildings.
The National Acting Director of Operations, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Grade 2 Kofi Forson, assured that the fire has been brought under control.
Minister Glover attributed the cause of the fire to the negligence of local traders and announced that the government would not compensate those affected by the disaster.
This decision has sparked mixed reactions among the community and the wider public.
As recovery efforts progress, authorities stress the crucial need for all stakeholders to cooperate to prevent future incidents and adhere strictly to safety regulations, underlining the importance of collective action.
