Six individuals wanted for murder and extortion were killed in a shootout with South African police in Durban late Monday, authorities reported.
The suspects, implicated in a triple murder on Friday and the execution-style killing of four people on Sunday, were gunned down after engaging in a gunfight with police at a rented holiday apartment near Durban’s South Beach district, according to a police statement issued on Tuesday.
South Africa, grappling with one of the highest murder rates globally, has seen an average of 68 murders per day nationwide between April and June, according to recent police data.
The suspects had been under surveillance since the Sunday killings, during which they had ordered their victims to lie down before shooting them in the back of the head. Police believe the group was also involved in the illicit drug trade.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is scheduled to address lawmakers later today about the prevalence of extortion and violent crime in the country.
