Former Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Eben Dida has called for greater awareness and remembrance of the May 9th Stadium Disaster, Ghanas worst football tragedy.Speaking on the anniversary today, Dida, who was on the pitch during the match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko in 2001, urged Ghanaians not to forget the lives lost. The May 9th Disaster occurred at the Accra Sports Stadium when a stampede during a league match led to the deaths of 127 fans. The tragedy was triggered by crowd trouble and police response, leading to one of the darkest days in African football history.Dida believes that every year, the country should use the day to reflect and educate the public to prevent future tragedies.”That day I was on the park I saw what happened when it gets to a day like this we have to create awareness we should say the tragedy is in the past. Anything can happen because football is still around and you don’t know when it will happen because we never thought that on that day the disaster will happen like that,” he told Peace FM as monitored by Ghanasoccernet.com “So when it gets to the anniversary day you don’t see anything we don’t create awareness that this is what happened to us and a lot of people died. When it is the anniversary day we have to do it big in Ghana so that people will learn from it when you are going to the park you will know what to do ,”
